GIS: Geometrical Object Type

Almost every object in our surroundings can be represented on a map using one of three different
basic geometrical object types. These are points, line and polygon

  1. POINT

    • It is the simplest type,
    • It has no spatial extension.
    • It is used to represent objects like a well, a tree, a soil sample pit, etc.
  2. LINE

    • Represent a linear structure
    • a road, a river or a powerline.
  3. POLYGON/SURFACE

    • It covers an area.
    • Examples lakes, forests, etc

Depending on the scale, the object types can also be dynamic. eg on the map of Africa, DSM city would be represented as a point while on a map of Eastern Tanzania, it would be presented as a polygon.
